DURANGO — A Colorado school board has decided to put away its idea of arming school staff after receiving comments in opposition the idea.
The Durango Herald reports the Mancos School Board decided to abandon plans to pursue policies and procedures related to armed staff and armed security officers at schools in a 4 to 1 vote against the idea.
About 60 residents, teachers and parents came to the board’s Monday meeting. Out of the 22 people who addressed the school board, three favored arming staff, three were unsure and 16 were against it.
Those against the idea expressed concerns about the social and emotional impact the guns would have on students.
The board says it will remind school staff to monitor doors.
