Governor announces AWS’ plan to invest billions into building data center in northern Indiana

NEW CARLISLE, Ind. (WPTA) - Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb announced Thursday morning that Amazon Web Services (AWS) has plans to build a data center campus in northern Indiana.

According to the governor’s office, AWS will invest $11 billion, the largest capital investment in state history, into the campus, creating at least 1,000 new jobs.

AWS is the world’s leading cloud provider and empowers businesses of any size in all industries to innovate and grow, a release by the governor’s office reads.

The AWS director of economic development, Roger Wehner, says Indiana is an ideal area for data processing due to its welcoming business atmosphere, rich infrastructure resources, skilled workforce pool, and growing technology and semiconductor industries.

St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners President Carl Baxmeyer says the boar is excited to welcome AWS to the area adding that its arrival will boost the local and regional economy.”This new data center campus to be built in the Indiana Enterprise Center (IEC) over the next decade will be a major employment center for all of northern Indiana. This project announcement also shows our alignment with the State’s goal to create next-level jobs that benefit all Hoosiers,” Baxmeyer said.

The Indiana Economic Development Center (IEDC) committed several different tax exemptions which total $98.3 million to AWS. The company will contribute $7 million to support road infrastructure improvements in the area where the new data center will be located.
